At WINS, our approach is rooted in the belief that true empowerment comes from within the community itself. We provide women and their families with the essential resources they need to thrive, but our commitment goes beyond just offering help. Many of the women who come to us seeking support often find a new beginning with WINS, becoming integral members of our team as employees or volunteers. This journey from receiving help to giving back is at the heart of what makes our community strong and resilient.

Our thrift stores are more than just places to shop—they're vibrant community hubs where employees, shoppers, and volunteers come together. These spaces foster connections and offer a sense of belonging, whether someone is looking for a good deal or seeking to make a difference. Similarly, our Community Resource Hubs provide safe, welcoming environments where women and their families can find emotional support, build new skills, and work toward their goals with the encouragement of a compassionate community.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of WINS, bringing their unique talents, enthusiasm, and energy to our team. They find fulfillment and friendship, and in turn, they become an essential part of our operations. We learn as much from our volunteers as they do from us, creating a mutual exchange of knowledge, skills, and support that strengthens our entire organization.

We are a charity social enterprise. Our approach is the social solution and the way of the future for non-profits in Alberta.

 

As per the suggestion found in the 2020 report on revitalizing civil society by the Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society, WINS emphasizes innovation and skill development in fundraising, social finance, and social enterprise through a comprehensive and sustainable model.

 

Because the model we operate on is self-sustaining, the funding of our programs can be allocated where the need is greatest without limitations or constraints. Funds and item donations from our supporters become an investment in a sustainable solution to gender inequality, poverty and environmental challenges, creating a lasting impact that continues to benefit Calgarians now and well into the future.

 

At WINS, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. Unlike traditional charities, our approach is deeply intertwined with the principles of the circular economy. Through our network of thrift stores, we give new life to gently used items, reducing waste and extending the lifecycle of products that might otherwise end up in landfills.
