Earth Day at WINS: Championing Sustainability Every Day

At WINS, sustainability isn’t just something we celebrate once a year—it’s at the core of our work, every single day.

Through the generosity of our community, we receive thousands of donations of gently used clothing and household items. Each item represents an opportunity: an opportunity to reduce waste, to extend the life of valuable resources, and to create meaningful change in the lives of women working toward economic independence. Every year, these donations help divert thousands of items from landfills. Instead of being discarded, they are given a second life through our network of thrift stores, supporting a more sustainable, circular economy right here in Calgary.

Where Sustainability Meets Social Impact

WINS operates as a social enterprise, meaning that every donation and every thrift store purchase contribute directly to programs that empower individuals, primarily women on their journey toward financial stability and independence.

This model is what makes our work unique. When you donate to or shop at WINS, you’re not only making an environmentally conscious choice—you’re also investing in people. You’re helping provide resources, training, and support systems that enable individuals to build brighter futures. Shop | WINS Calgary

Because of this, every day at WINS is Earth Day.

Our Commitment to a Circular Economy

At the heart of our work is a commitment to reduce waste and promote responsible consumption. By keeping usable items in circulation longer, we reduce the demand for new production, conserve natural resources, and lower our collective environmental footprint.

This approach aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:

  • Responsible Consumption and Production

  • Climate Action

By embracing these principles, WINS is helping to build a more sustainable and resilient community, one where environmental responsibility and social impact go hand in hand.

Small Actions, Big Impact

It’s easy to underestimate the impact of a single donation, but together, those small actions add up to something powerful.

A bag of clothing you no longer need can:

  • Stay out of a landfill

  • Be reused by someone who needs it

  • Help fund programs that support women in our community

That’s the power of choosing to donate to WINS.

How You Can Get Involved This Earth Day

This Earth Day, we invite you to take part in creating a more sustainable future.

Start by looking through your closet or home for gently used items you no longer need. Clothing, accessories, and household goods can all make a difference.

By donating to WINS, you are:

  • Reducing waste

  • Supporting a circular economy

  • Empowering individuals in your community

It’s a simple action with a lasting impact.

A Collective Effort for People and the Planet

Sustainability is a shared responsibility and it’s one that becomes more impactful when we act together.

At WINS, we are proud to be part of a community that values both environmental stewardship and social change. With your continued support, we can keep transforming donations into opportunity, creating positive outcomes for individuals, families, and the planet for years to come.

Donations of gently used clothing and household items are urgently needed. Support Calgary women and help protect our environment by dropping off your items at your nearest WINS location. Donate Goods | WINS Calgary

Together, we can care for the Earth while creating meaningful, lasting change in our community.

Happy Earth Day!
