How Friendship and Thrift Shopping Helped Rebuild a Life

When Lynette found out she had won a shopping spree at WINS Glenbrook, her first thought wasn’t about what she could get for herself but what she could do for her best friend, Peggy.

Lynette knew her best friend had been through a lot, when Peggy’s apartment caught fire, leaving everything she owned damaged beyond repair. Even with insurance, it was never going to be the same. Peggy was the kind of person who rarely asked for help, but Lynette knew she needed support now more than ever.

So, Lynette did what any true friend would do—she invited Peggy to share the shopping spree with her. They headed to WINS’ new Glenbrook location in southwest Calgary, a place filled with pre-loved treasures just waiting for a second chance.

As they walked through the store, surrounded by furniture and housewares that spoke of new beginnings, Lynette saw a spark in Peggy’s eyes that had been missing for months. Peggy was drawn to a quirky item for her cat almost immediately, a small but meaningful start to rebuilding her home.

They had been best friends for so long, it felt like destiny. Meeting in college at Lethbridge, they had shared their dreams, fears, and countless cups of coffee during late-night study sessions. Life took them on different paths for a while, but they found their way back to each other, stronger than ever. Now, they were more than just friends—they were lifelines.

For Peggy, starting over felt overwhelming. The emotional toll of losing her home was heavy, and while she tried to put on a brave face, Lynette knew better. There’s nothing worse than facing a tough time alone, and Lynette was determined to make sure Peggy didn’t have to.

With every item they added to their cart, whether it was a lovely vintage drawer or a set of colorful mugs, Lynette was helping Peggy rebuild not just her apartment but her sense of hope and security.

Sometimes, life demands that we be strong for ourselves and for others, but Lynette knew that strength wasn’t always about standing alone. Sometimes, it was about having someone beside you to share the load, someone to laugh with and cry with, someone who could make even a difficult day a little bit brighter with a thrift store find and a shared smile.

As they left the store, cart filled with newfound treasures and hearts filled with gratitude, Lynette knew that this was more than just a shopping trip. It was a reminder of what true friendship looks like—standing together through the ups and downs, and never letting the other walk alone.
